More Scandals, Recalls Rock the Auto Industry

From the VW emissions scandal to mounting Takata airbag defects, recalls continue to mount in the auto industry.

In the latest recall to rock the industry, auto giant Toyota has announced it’s fourth recall since 2009 linked to faulty power window switches, recalling 6.5 million vehicles globally.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a recent surge in recalls is due in part to auto makers becoming more proactive in recalling vehicles following industry wide scandals, and also because companies use more common components among models – leading auto makers to recall a large number of vehicles when problems are detected in a part.

Toyota has been working hard on damage control after the recall of millions of cars globally for various problems, including the growing Takata airbag scandal, one of the largest recalls in this country’s history.

Airbag Inquiry Widens

In this latest Toyota recall, a mechanism inside the power-window switch did not have an adequate amount of lubricant, potentially triggering overheating and melting – and possibly resulting in fire. Toyota to recall 6.5 million vehicles

Approximately two million vehicles are included in this latest recall in the U.S., including the 2009 to 2011 Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia, Tundra and Scion xB. Also included are the 2008 to 2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2006 to 2011 RAV4, 2006 to 2010Yaris and 2009-10 Scion xD.
