Kroger Co. Latest in Accellion Data Breach

February 24, 2021 Data Breaches

Kroger Co. the national grocery store chain, has confirmed a data breach in connection with the Accellion flagship software, FTA.

The company reported that sensitive customer information was compromised, particularly customer information from Kroger Health, and Money Services. In addition, data on current and former staff members, and human resource files were also compromised.

Kroger Co. joins a growing list of companies around the world who have been impacted by the Accellion data breach, including The State of Washington, law firm Jones Day, Singapore Telecommunications company, Singtel, and the Reserve Bank of Switzerland.

The Accellion data breach occurred in December of 2020 when the Accellion enterprise content firewall, a platform designed to protect against data breaches and minimize compliance violations from third parties, was infiltrated by an unauthorized third party.

Cyber criminals were able to gain access to data through the company’s flagship product, FTA which is a large file transfer product that, as the company stated in a recent press release, was “a 20 year old product nearing end-of life.”

Accellion initially downplayed the breach, however, with the wave of Accellion clients experiencing data breaches in direct relation to the incident, the technology service provider is finding it difficult to minimize the incident.
