In October 2019, the American Academy of Ophthalmology released a report that showed a correlation between taking the popular drug Elmiron and vision loss or ocular damage. Elmiron is the only FDA-approved medication for Interstitial cystitis, an irreparable condition that causes chronic pain in the bladder and/or pelvis area.

Studies found that people who take the drug Elmiron, for an extended period of time may develop eye damage. A study done by Kaiser found that Elmiron users developed a degenerative disorder called Pigmentary Maculopathy and other similar diagnoses.

Elmiron is manufactured by a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson called Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The company only recently (June 2020), updated their drug warning to include possible eye damage and vision lossin Elmiron users.
