Progressive Data Breach 2023: Over 340K Clients Affected

CaseyGerry is investigating a recent data breach that may have compromised the personal data of over 340,000 Progressive Casualty Insurance (“Progressive”) clients. Progressive is the third-largest insurance company in the country and provides several insurance services, including auto, boat, and motorcycle insurance, to over 18 million customers.

What happened in the Progressive Data Breach?

According to the breach report filed with the California Office of the Attorney General, Progressive sometimes uses third-party call center vendors. In May 2023, a vendor informed Progressive of a potential breach that occurred when the vendor’s employees shared data access credentials with unauthorized parties.

What type of customer information was breached?

The report states that highly sensitive personal data was exposed in this breach, including customers:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Driver’s License Number

Who was affected?

At least 347,100 Progressive customers were compromised in the breach.

How did Progressive respond to the data breach?

Progressive stated it launched an investigation into the incident after it was made aware of the breach in May 2023. However, Bloomberg Law News reports the breach may have occurred over the course of several years. Progressive began sending out notifications of the breach on August 1, 2023.
