Consumer Alert – Boppy Infant Lounger Manufacturer Re-Issues Recall After More Infant Deaths

Boppy has re-issued a recall of the Boppy Infant Lounger which has been linked to at least 10 infant deaths. The Boppy loungers under recall are the Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers. The Boppy loungers were designed to be used when infants were awake and under supervision, however, it was found that babies were at risk of suffocation or asphyxiation within minutes.

Over three million units of the loungers were recalled in 2021 after eight infant deaths were reported, but an NBC investigation found that Bobby and other infant lounger brands were linked to more than twice the number of deaths announced.

The 2021 recall failed to curb the danger as two more infant deaths were reported after the recall. The continuous danger these infant loungers pose could be due to inadequate action of product manufacturers to inform consumers of the dangers, or it may be linked to a more pervasive and harder to curb culprit – illegal, second-hand sales of recalled products.

According to the NBC report, Meta’s Facebook Marketplace failed to stop the sale of the Boppy Lounger despite numerous requests from the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the product manufacturer. Many of the recalled Boppy products remain available on Facebook Marketplace.
