Common Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

Below are some of the common causes of traumatic brain injury. This is not a comprehensive list, as there are many ways to suffer a TBI. For those whose brain injury was caused by another person’s negligence, they may have legal recourse available.

Falls

A slip and fall incident can cause someone to violently hit the floor, a wall, or a nearby object. Stairs, railings and balconies can lead to an even more devastating injury by falling from high above the ground. That’s why property owners are responsible for maintaining their premises by fixing or removing all known safety issues they knew about (or should have known about) that were present on the property. Failure to do so can cause a person to fall and sustain a TBI and/or other severe injuries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that traumatic brain injuries are most often caused by a fall. Nearly half of all emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths are related to falls each year.

Strikes

A blow to the head is the second leading cause of traumatic brain injury. The CDC notes that the risk of this type of TBI is even greater for children under the age of 15. A strike might occur with an object or even another person. Contact sports, such as boxing and tackle football, are particularly risky for this kind of injury. Coaches and sports organizations must take every measure possible to protect players from sustaining brain injuries.

Vehicle Crashes

The impact of a vehicle collision can cause a person to hit his or her head on the inside of the car. However, a driver or passenger can also suffer a brain injury without a blow to the head. A violent whip of the neck and head during an accident can cause the brain to collide with the inside of the skull. This type of TBI can have effects that are just as dangerous as a strike to the head.

Motor vehicle crashes are the third leading cause of brain injury-related emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and deaths, according to the CDC.
