GEICO Drivers License Data Breach

Popular auto insurance provider, Geico, has reported a data breach that occurred from January 21 to March 1, 2021.

According to the April 20, 2021 Forbes report, ‘Hackers Stole Customers’ License Numbers From Geico In Months-Long Breach,’ an unauthorized third party gained access to the company’s system with information obtained elsewhere, and, over the months-long breach, acquired only Drivers’ License numbers.

In the data breach notice filed by Geico, the insurance provider cautioned that cybercriminals could use the accessed information to file for unemployment benefits.

Geico did not offer an explanation as to how or why the breach occurred, or why hackers maintained access to the system for over a month.

The data breach notification did not provide the number of customers affected; however, a company is required to file a notice of breach with the California State Attorney General if the breach affected 500 people or more.

As one of the country’s largest insurance providers, Geico insures over 27 million vehicles and offers vehicle insurance for automobiles, motorcycles, boats, and more.

With the company’s large market share, and the length of time the hackers had access to the company’s network, the pool of those who may have been impacted could be in the millions.
